Newsletter Auction - Email Bot Prevention (and Auction Billing)

Advertisers shouldn’t be charged for bot traffic. In addition to robust web bot click prevention measures, HotelTechReport offers an automated refund process to catch and reverse bot clicks before they distort spend or performance for email campaigns delivered through our proprietary auction system.

Purpose

Ensure advertisers only pay for legitimate clicks.

How it works

  • Periodically reviews recent click activity across active campaigns

  • Focuses on email-originated clicks, where bot abuse is more common

  • Analyzes click patterns for known bot signals (velocity, IP reuse, user agents, session behavior)

  • Automatically refunds clicks identified as fraudulent

Net result

Cleaner traffic, accurate billing, and advertiser trust—without manual review

Billing Guidance for Advertisers

Advertisers with very low credit balances and small auto-top-up amounts may see multiple charges in a short period of time when an email campaign is delivering. This can happen before bot-click detection executes retroactively and refunds are processed.

There’s nothing to worry about any clicks later identified as bot traffic are automatically and retroactively refunded back to your credit balance. Your final spend will always reflect only legitimate clicks.

Best practice:
For advertisers participating in email auctions, HotelTechReport recommends either:

  • Maintaining a minimum credit balance of $1,000 ($500 minimum)

    • Setting an auto-top-up amount of $1,000 ($500 minimum)

This helps avoid unnecessary interruptions, repeated small charges, and temporary balance swings while refunds are being processed.
